Vintage Cupcakes

I received an order for some cupcakes from a lovely lady as a thank you to a large medical practice, so I suggested a Vintage theme because they are always popular and lets face it, who doesn’t like Vintage cupcakes!!

I know I do!

I had run out of the large inserts that hold the cupcakes steady in their box and had a distance to drive so I was being very, very,VERY careful, the last thing you want is to open the box at the destination and see a mess of icing!

Driving 10km under the speed limit did not make the other drivers happy and I was cursing myself for not putting the “cake on board” sign on my car, I’m such a perfectionist, that if one little bit of icing is out-of-place I feel compelled to redo it, not possible in transit though 🙂

Of course it was raining….again  (where is our Aussie summer?) and I had to drive through traffic, over road works round several roundabouts, but all was well in the end, fortunately they arrived unscathed and pretty as ever, after delivery I then headed straight to the packaging supply store for more cupcake inserts..no more delivery stress, I am locked and loaded for the next cupcake journey  😀

These little cuties were Vanilla Butter cake, with Vanilla butter cream icing and hand made fondant Bows, Roses and flowers, that had been highlighted in edible petal dust, they turned out beautifully and were very much appreciated by the recipients.

As I mentioned I particularly like Vintage themed cakes, there is something so timeless in their pretty elegance and the combinations are endless.

I can’t wait for the next ‘Vintage’ order so I can try something new!

Here they are below!

Feel free to comment on any of posts, feedback is always welcome.

Gluten Free Frangipani Cake

Summertime and the living is easy…..

So is taking a huge mouthful of this Gluten Free chocolate Frangipani cake made especially for a Dear friend’s Birthday!

The entire cake is completely edible (except for the ribbon)

The Flowers and Shells were hand made and painted with various petal and lustre dusts, the sand was made from Gluten Free shortbread crushed to simulate sand on the beach.

The cake itself was GF Chocolate cake layered with rich dark chocolate Ganache, covered with white fondant.

I think it captured that summery tropical feel perfectly!

Ironically, delivery day was cold, wet and foggy….go figure 🙂

Merry Christmas and a Happy new Year from Sugar Sugar

I know it is a little past due (blame good friends, good food and a long overdue rest!!!)

I Hope Everyone had a Very Merry Christmas!

I would also like to wish you all a Wonderful New year to come.

Thank you to everyone who ordered cakes in 2011, I loved every minute of it, I hope to be able to create more magic for you in 2012, all ordering will resume after January 20th****

( I really need a little break!! ZzzzzZZZzzz ).

Christmas present cake 2011

This was a cake I made for a Christmas table centerpiece.

Red velvet cake on the inside.

I deliberately gave the fondant a slightly ‘baggy’ look to simulate paper wrapping.

(Yes, it fooled quite a few who didn’t look closely enough!) Hah!

The ruse was discovered when an inquisitive guest gave the cake a gentle poke to check.

Last-Minute New Years Eve Cupcakes (and I do mean ‘last minute’)   🙂

I had a last-minute call for a NYE batch of cupcakes (literally just under 1 hour) Yikes.

Red velvet cupcakes with Vanilla butter frosting.

(A quick visit to the fridge cooled those cakes in record time while I created the all edible glittery fondant lettering with the speed of an African swallow in a tail wind, so forgive me the less than perfect rush job!)  😀

I’m usually a diligent perfectionist but there was NO time to fuss!!

Then it was a mad dash out the door into the car and off I went, it was a hard task fending off sticky fingers till midnight at the party and no they were not children *grin*

Come Midnight and they all vanished like the memory of 2011!!!

Carousel Cake

This Carousel cake was made for Little Alina’s first birthday, her Mum wanted an all pink and white theme, it also had a matching seperate smash cake.

Now I won’t lie this cake WAS a challenge, (  and I DO love a challenge)  and there was a little bit of colourful language on the odd occasion (Hah!) because I am a perfectionist and it took almost two weeks to make this cake from start to finish, and it was hot, humid and rainy but having said that it was also a lot of FUN to make, watching it come together was a joy, everything apart from the support structure and ribbon was made from either icing or cake.

The horses were all totally hand made complete with pretty saddles, manes and tails, the ‘mirrors’ were food grade mirrored cardboard surrounded by cachous (non pareilles) to look like carousel lights.

The floor of the carousel where the horse poles sat was a cake board covered in fondant with a wooden floor pattern embossed over it which was then dusted in pink and white shimmer petal dust.

The upper most tier (roof) was all fondant with cachous for a pearly trim while the lower tier was Butter Vanilla cake covered in high humidity buttercream because BOY was it hot that day 30c, the cake survived and was very well recieved as you can read further below.

So here it is! What do you think?

(I accidently chopped off the top of the flagpole in this pic lol)

This is what Alina’s Mum had to say about THE cake below

(hey I think this cake deserves an uppercase THE lol)

The party went really well and the photographer I had said that the party was one of the best kids party he has photographed – so cant wait to see the photos. When it was time to sing happy birthday, I took the cake outside and all the guests were in absolute AWE!

All the guests were commenting on how beautiful the cake was – it was really the highlight of the party. All guests also ate the cake and took some home so I guess they enjoyed it.

Alina loved the smashing cake – and even ate the icing and cake – she really enjoyed it and a few other kids also joined in – it was a great event !

I was really happy with your work and dedication, It was absolutely stunning – more than I could ever imagine!

The birthday girl, Mum and Dad and of course THE cake.

(yes it was a large cake and weighed a LOT)

The smashed smash cake was a success!

Feet in cake a definate must lol

MMMM cake is GOOD!

What’s the Buzz?

Well, Buzz Lightyear from Toy story of course!!

This cake was ordered for a young man who was turning 5 and loves the buzz man.

It sure created a buzz on the day surrounded by 30 matching cupcakes in green and purple, it was undoubtedly a hit because it all vanished in a nano second!!!

There were lots of delighted and buttercream smeared grins not to mention some very very full tummies followed by some fun filled sugar fueled playtime.

(do small children inhale cake ?, they can make a cupcake dissapear with lighting speed lol  😀 )

Burger Cake for Father’s Day!

First of all, Happy Father’s Day to all the Dad’s out there!

Secondly, I have been very remiss in updating my blog due to an ever increasing schedule, despite my best intentions I never seem to have enough time!!

I swear they should introduce 30 hour days to make up the shortfall lol

Ok sooo back to Father’s day!

One of the cakes I had been tasked with this week was a Father’s day cake, they didn’t want the cliche ties, bottles of booze, cigars etc etc etc, they asked me to come up with something different.

I sat and thought…and thought…and then thought some more…..when suddenly!!!

What do men love?? FOOD of course! and what man in his right mind can go past an always popular good old fashioned hamburger!

And thus the Burger cake was created…and it was considered good! lol

The cake was chocolate mudcake with chocolate fudge layers, covered in fondant with royal icing ketchup.

It was a huge hit, they absolutely loved it and I really enjoyed making it too!

(plus I kind of like the whole food pretending to be different food thing lol)

I don’t know about you, but I am suddenly hungry LOL

Strawberry and Cream Cupcakes

I received a request for Strawberry cupcakes this evening so I whipped some up, the only criteria was they had to be ‘really strawberryish’  using fresh strawberries!!

Which was fine by me, I LOVE strawberry and as I rigorously taste test for quality assurance I wasn’t too unhappy about it.

(Usually followed by an energetic power walk for a few blocks ) 😀

These cuppies were made with fresh strawberry puree added to a buttercake, which was then topped with a mild strawberry buttercream and a freshly sliced strawberry added to complete the request for “über Strawberryishness”….

They were VERY nom nom nomish!!!

(Hey I HAD to taste test remember! )

Then I got all ‘Arty’ with the pics lol, why am I always more inspired at night when the light is bad ??
(mind you I kind of like the way these ones turned out……)

(The picture below is a bit more ‘Arty’ and looks much much better seen in its larger format)
